Periodicities in Solar Flare Occurrence: Analysis of Cycles 19–23
Mid-range periodicities in solar flare occurrence have been analyzed with new methods for cycles 19–23. During cycle 23, periodicities of 129-d and 33.5-d were in operation. Five episodes of high activity occurred periodically with the 129-d period. The 33.5-d periodicity mainly operated for energetic flares. Results for cycles 19–21 are generally in agreement with previous analyses. For cycle ...
متن کاملNonlocal communication in self-organising models of solar flare occurrence
Recent avalanche models of solar flare occurrence which consider the magnetised solar atmosphere to be in a state of self-organised criticality have concentrated mainly on the magnetic field as the means by which individual energy release sites communicate with neighbouring sites. This, however, neglects the possibility of remote triggering of energy release via fast particles. In this paper we...
متن کاملSolar Flare Cycles
We present a review of different solar flare periodicity intervals. Our analysis includes a statistical investigation of flare occurrence and N-S hemispheric distribution over the last three 11-yr solar cycles (SCs 21-23, corresponding to the period 1976-2001). Moreover, we try to estimate if there is any connection between the flare activity and the strength of solar cycles. For that purpose, ...
متن کاملLetter to the Editor Analytical results in a cellular automaton model of solar flare occurrence
Methods of the branching theory are applied to the Macpherson–MacKinnon (1997) cellular automation model for the occurrence of solar flares. The distribution of flare energies is shown to be a power law with the slope α = 3/2 independent of dimensionality D of the model and in nice agreement with observations, arguing in favor of the model. An expression for the upper energy cut-off and a condi...
متن کاملVariability of the occurrence frequency of solar flares and the statistical flare
Self-Organised Criticality (SOC), embedded in cellular automata models, has been so far viewed as an attractive phenomenological approach for studying the statistical behaviour of flaring activity in solar active regions. Well-known statistical properties of flares, like the robust scaling laws seen in the distribution functions of characteristic parameters of the events, as well as correlation...
